FCT Resident Doctors Begin Seven-Day Warning Strike Over Systemic Failures

The Association of Resident Doctors in the Federal Capital Territory (ARD-FCT) has initiated a seven-day warning strike, citing a critical and prolonged breakdown in the city’s healthcare system.

The union announced this decisive action in an official communique signed by its President, Dr. George Ebong, and other executive members.

The doctors have characterised the health system in the nation’s capital as a case of “longstanding systemic failure” that demands immediate and comprehensive reform.

Dr. Ebong elaborated on the immense pressure facing medical personnel, who are consistently overworked and frequently forced to cover shifts across multiple departments due to severe staffing shortages. This situation, he noted, jeopardises both the well-being of healthcare workers and the quality of patient care.

This industrial action follows appeals made by the union last month, urging the government to swiftly address the escalating challenges within the FCT’s health sector. The resident doctors are calling for an urgent government intervention to tackle a host of critical issues.

These include acute manpower shortages, the prevalence of non-functional medical equipment, deteriorating working conditions, and the non-payment of owed staff allowances.

Dr. Ebong issued a stern warning that continued governmental neglect and inaction on these pressing matters could lead to a complete and catastrophic collapse of the healthcare system in the Federal Capital Territory. The seven-day strike serves as a final warning to prompt immediate action before a potential indefinite walkout.
