The Federal government has announced that a special session of the Federal Executive Council (FEC) will be held on Thursday, July 17, 2025, in honour of former President Muhammadu Buhari.
The session, which was initially postponed, will now take place at 5 p.m., with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu leading the tributes for the late leader.
Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga confirmed the details in a statement on Wednesday, noting that the session would serve as an opportunity for the federal government to pay its respects to the departed former president.
Muhammadu Buhari, who passed away on Sunday at the London Clinic, was laid to rest on Tuesday in a state burial held in his hometown of Daura, Katsina State.
The postponement of the earlier scheduled session had raised questions, but the presidency has now finalised arrangements for the event, ensuring that key government officials and dignitaries can participate in honouring Buhari’s legacy.
The late president, who served two terms from 2015 to 2023, played a significant role in Nigeria’s political history, and the special FEC session is expected to reflect on his contributions to national development.
President Tinubu, who succeeded Buhari, is set to deliver remarks during the session, alongside other cabinet members who served under the former administration. The event will also provide an avenue for reflections on Buhari’s leadership, policies, and impact on Nigeria’s governance.
The federal government has declared a period of national mourning, with flags flown at half-mast in honour of the late president. The special FEC session is part of a series of official events commemorating Muhammadu Buhari’s life and service to the nation.
