FG announces reopening of Lagos’ Independence bridge to ease heavy traffic

The Nigerian government has ordered the immediate reopening of the Independence Bridge in Victoria Island, Lagos State, following heavy traffic congestion caused by its recent closure.

The directive was issued by the Minister of Works, Dave Umahi, on Wednesday, according to a source familiar with the development.

However, full details of the order remain unclear at the time of reporting.

The decision comes in response to growing concerns from commuters and motorists who have been experiencing severe gridlock due to the ongoing rehabilitation of the bridge.

Many residents had urged the federal government to reconsider the closure and find alternative solutions to ease traffic congestion in the area.

Two days ago, the federal government announced that Independence Bridge would be closed from April 1, 2025, to allow for vital repairs.

While the closure was intended to facilitate much-needed rehabilitation, the resulting traffic jams quickly became a major issue for road users, prompting fresh calls for the government to reopen the bridge.

With the minister’s directive, motorists and commuters can now expect some relief as traffic flow is expected to improve.

However, it remains unclear how the government plans to balance ongoing repair efforts on the independence bridge with the need to keep traffic moving smoothly in one of Lagos State’s busiest areas.
