Femi Falana, a lawyer and human rights advocate, has called on the federal government to provide compensation to the families of those killed in the recent stampedes in various regions of the nation.
Falana made this statement on Friday in Akure at an event honouring the late governor called the Akeredolu Leadership Lecture Series, which was organized by the Ondo State Government.
In the recent stampedes in Ibadan, Anambra, and Abuja, where more than 65 persons perished while gathering palliatives, the attorney criticized the Nigeria Police.
He said that the police did not provide enough protection for the public during the events.
The Senior Advocate said:
“It was failure of security; it’s not poverty that caused all the loss of lives.
“If there is any process or gathering, they, the police, shall provide security.”
Falana said that by maintaining peace inside its borders through the establishment of the Ondo State Security Network, codenamed Amotekun, by Akeredolu, Ondo State has emerged as a model for other states in the nation.
