Mr Abideen Olatunbosun, national president of the Nigerian Association of Liquefied Petroleum Gas Marketers, or NALPGAM, raised alarm about the growing price of gas yesterday. He said that if the increase is not handled, gas would become a product exclusively accessible to the wealthy.
However, the group encouraged the Federal Government to maintain the country’s cooking gas price stability.
At the association’s 36th Annual General Meeting, or AGM, which was held in Ibadan, Olatunbosun made this statement.
He stated:
“I need to state that the continuous increase in the price of gas, in recent times, stands as a big challenge to LPG marketers. The hike in the price of gas is a concern to all.
“The government needs to find ways to ensure the stability of gas prices as well as make gas available to common Nigerians.
“As a country, we need to improve on our gas utilisation level and if we all adopt gas, it will save our forest and improve the quality of our lifestyle and the economy will grow.”
The current deregulation policy will lead to a reflective petroleum products price, according to Mr Ogbugo Ukoha, Executive Director of Distribution Systems, Storage and Retailing Infrastructure at the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority, or NMDPRA.
Ukoha observed that the domestic petrol supply has surpassed the import supply, according to recent data.
