The Nigerian government has issued an update regarding the ongoing implementation of wage awards and the new national minimum wage for public sector workers.
According to an official statement from the Office of the Accountant-General of the Federation, significant progress has been made in disbursing the wage awards designed to cushion the economic impact on workers while negotiations for a permanent minimum wage increase continue.
Government sources confirmed that federal civil servants have started receiving the temporary wage award payments as promised, with the process expected to be completed across all ministries and agencies within the coming weeks.
The payments represent an interim measure while the Tripartite Committee on National Minimum Wage finalises its deliberations with labour unions, private sector representatives, and state governments.
The Minister of Labour and Employment emphasised that the administration remains committed to workers’ welfare, noting that the new minimum wage structure will reflect current economic realities when implemented.
“We understand the challenges workers face, and we are working diligently to ensure a fair and sustainable wage system,” the Minister stated.
Labour leaders have cautiously welcomed the wage award payments but reiterated their demand for a swift conclusion to minimum wage negotiations.
The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and Trade Union Congress (TUC) maintain that the current N30,000 minimum wage award, established in 2019, has been rendered inadequate by inflation and rising living costs.
The government assured that all stakeholders would reach a mutually acceptable resolution soon, urging patience as the committee works to balance workers’ needs with the nation’s fiscal constraints.
