Federal Government has reiterated its unwavering commitment to combating gender-based violence and all forms of discrimination against women.
The Minister of Women Affairs and Social Development, Imaam Sulaiman-Ibrahim, made this reaffirmation during a working visit to Ogun State, which included a stop at the Sexual Assault Referral Centre in Asero, Abeokuta.
During the visit, the Minister highlighted alarming statistics, revealing that 31 percent of Nigerian women between the ages of 15 and 49 have experienced physical violence, while over 28 percent have suffered sexual violence at least once in their lifetime.
She emphasised that these figures are not merely numbers but represent countless individual tragedies, each one a daughter, sister, mother, or neighbour whose life has been profoundly affected.
Sulaiman-Ibrahim stressed that gender-based violence is not a private issue but a pervasive community crisis that threatens family stability, undermines peace, and hinders national development.
She pointed to the urgency of the situation, calling for concerted action driven by both compassion and steadfast commitment.
The Minister also outlined the government’s strategic response under President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda.
Through the Renewed Hope Social Impact Intervention Programmes, the administration aims to restore dignity, expand opportunities, and strengthen family structures. These policies are designed to ensure that no woman, child, or vulnerable person is left behind, creating a safer and more equitable society for all Nigerians.
