Thousands of people have been left homeless after torrential rains wrecked numerous buildings and farmlands in Gusau, the capital of Zamfara State, on Friday.
The flood, which began about 8:14 a.m. on Friday, wrecked numerous residences behind the State Police Commissioner’s home, making it difficult for inhabitants to preserve their treasured belongings.
Ibrahim Muhammad Musa, a local resident, described the situation as dire, as the strong rain caught everyone off guard and ruined people’s houses and farmlands in the uncontrollable water.
According to him, they were aware that the region was a waterway but constructed their homes and farmlands there in the hope that the state government would take measures to avoid floods.
“But none of the administrations even cared about our plight, even though we always vote for them. They promise heaven and earth during campaigns, but when they get what they want, they abandon us,” he lamented.
At Angwar Danturai, near Government House, the situation was dire, with children spotted swimming in the river and homes worth millions of Naira damaged by the destructive flood.
The issue drew a large crowd, and locals were perplexed by the nasty episode.
The flood also caused significant damage to the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) Secretariat in Gusau.
