Former Kaduna State Governor, Malam Nasir El-Rufai, has publicly declared that he will not be contesting for any political office, including a Senate seat, in the upcoming 2027 general elections.
He made this announcement in Kaduna while receiving a delegation of youths who had defected from the Peoples Democratic Party to the African Democratic Congress. El-Rufai clarified that his decision to re-engage in the political arena is not driven by personal ambition but by a commitment to supporting the emergence of credible leadership for the nation.
He explained that after leaving office, he had initially intended to retire from politics entirely. However, the prevailing national situation compelled him to reconsider, feeling a sense of duty to contribute to positive change.
His stated focus has now shifted from seeking office to mentoring a new generation of young leaders, women, and reform-minded citizens, encouraging them to take active roles in governance and public service.
In a strong critique of the current administration, El-Rufai accused the government of consistent falsehoods and widespread failure across multiple sectors, asserting that Nigerians can readily see these shortcomings without lengthy explanations.
He called for collective action to remove what he termed “the oppressors” and replace them with competent leadership.
Emphasising that political participation is a civic necessity, not an option, he urged all eligible Nigerians to register to vote, highlighting that elections remain the primary mechanism for holding leaders accountable and driving meaningful change.
He concluded by reaffirming that politics should transcend personal gain and that his mission is to empower the next generation and strengthen democratic institutions for the future.
