The Nigerian football community is mourning the loss of former Super Eagles coach Monday Sinclair, who passed away on Wednesday at the age of 88 after a prolonged battle with diabetes.
The news of his death was confirmed by former Nigerian goalkeeper Peterside Idah, who shared the sad announcement through a Facebook post in the afternoon.
Idah, who was one of many players discovered and nurtured by Monday Sinclair, paid emotional tribute to his mentor. “Our daddy is gone. What a man. He signed me to play for Sharks. Gave me my first match against Niger Tornadoes of Minna,” Idah wrote, reflecting on how Sinclair played a pivotal role in launching his professional career.
Sinclair briefly took charge of the Super Eagles as interim coach in 1997 following the dismissal of Frenchman Philippe Troussier. During his short tenure, he managed the national team in two friendly matches against Zambia and Tunisia. However, his most significant contribution to Nigerian football was his exceptional eye for talent, having discovered and developed some of the country’s most celebrated players.
Among the notable stars Sinclair helped bring into the limelight were legendary goalkeeper Peter Rufai, tough-tackling defender Taribo West, skilful winger Finidi George, and Peterside Idah himself. His ability to identify and groom young talents left an indelible mark on Nigerian football, with many of his discoveries going on to achieve great success both domestically and internationally.
The passing of Monday Sinclair marks the end of an era for Nigerian football, as tributes continue to pour in from players, coaches, and fans honouring his legacy as both a tactician and talent developer. His contributions to the sport will be remembered as the football community reflects on his impactful career.
