Former Super Eagles Star Urges Immediate Sack of Coaching Staff to Keep World Cup Hopes Alive

In a bold move, ex-Super Eagles goalkeeper Peterside Idah has called on the Nigeria Football Federation to dismiss head coach Jose Peseiro following Nigeria’s lackluster start to the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers. The team struggled to secure wins, settling for draws against Lesotho and Zimbabwe, leaving them with a mere two points from three games and languishing in third place in Group C.

Idah, convinced that Peseiro’s leadership will lead to further disappointment, emphasized the urgency of change, declaring, “First, fire the coach. He has to go because he will lead us nowhere.” The former shot-stopper proposed a coalition of renowned former Nigerian internationals to take charge, suggesting Sunday Oliseh, Daniel Amokachi, and Vincent Enyeama as a formidable trio capable of steering the Super Eagles to World Cup qualification.

In a plea directed at the Minister of Sports Development, Idah stressed the need for immediate intervention to avoid further embarrassment. Urging swift action, he stated, “We are in an emergency situation. Call Sunday Oliseh, Daniel Amokachi, Vincent Enyeama, Barrister Green, Paul Bassey, and myself and hand over the team to us with a mission statement, ‘We must qualify for the World Cup,’ and empower the team with everything that is required. You will see qualification for the World Cup accomplished.”

With Nigeria having missed the 2022 World Cup, Idah believes that a coaching overhaul is imperative for the Super Eagles to secure a spot in the next edition of the prestigious tournament.
