Fresh attack on Makurdi–Naka road leaves several dead and many injured

On Friday evening, June 6, 2025, suspected armed herdsmen launched a deadly attack along the Makurdi–Naka road in Benue State, resulting in multiple deaths and several injuries.

Eyewitnesses reported that the attackers struck suddenly, causing panic among commuters and leaving many stranded in fear for their lives.

The Makurdi–Naka road has been increasingly unsafe in recent weeks, with armed groups believed to be Fulani militia maintaining control over parts of the area.

This latest attack occurred despite assurances from security agencies that measures were being taken to address the worsening situation. It also comes shortly after the Chief of Army Staff, Lieutenant General Olufemi Oluyede, moved his operations to Benue in a bid to stem the tide of violence sweeping through the state.

Following the incident, the Benue State Police Command confirmed the attack and stated that tactical teams had been deployed to the affected area. Police Public Relations Officer Edet Udeme reassured the public that efforts were ongoing to bring the situation under control and that further updates would be provided in due course.

Governor Hyacinth Alia has repeatedly expressed concern over the security crisis in Benue, describing the situation as a full-blown siege by terrorists and bandits. He emphasised that these assaults are not spontaneous farmer-herder clashes but organised terrorist operations aimed at destabilising the region.

In response to the continued violence, the Catholic Bishops’ Conference of Nigeria issued a strong statement condemning the attacks and criticising both the state and federal governments for their failure to protect innocent lives. As outrage and grief spread across the state, there are increasing calls for urgent and decisive government action to restore peace and security in Benue.
