At least five people have died following an explosion at an illegal petroleum storage facility in Omoku, located in the Ogba/Egbema/Ndoni Local Government Area (ONELGA) of Rivers State.

The explosion occurred when a fire ignited at a residential home where illegally refined petroleum products were being stored.

The explosion resulted in the deaths of five people, and others sustained injuries.

The Youths and Environmental Advocacy Centre (YEAC-Nigeria) confirmed the occurrence of the explosion and fire incident, highlighting the dangers associated with illegal oil refining activities.

These unregulated operations often lack safety measures, leading to hazardous situations for individuals involved and the surrounding communities.

Local authorities have responded to the incident, with emergency services working to manage the aftermath and provide assistance to those affected.

Investigations are underway to determine the exact cause of the explosion and to prevent future occurrences.

The explosion underscores the urgent need for stricter enforcement of laws regulating oil storage and refining activities, as well as increased public awareness about the risks of engaging in illegal petroleum operations.

The government and relevant agencies are called upon to take decisive actions to address this issue and ensure the safety of communities in oil-producing regions.
