Nigerian filmmaker and award-winning actress Funke Akindele has shared a powerful message about the importance of speaking up and prioritizing mental health. In a heartfelt tweet, the actress emphasized that staying alive and seeking help can lead to solutions, no matter the challenges.
In her tweet, Funke urged people not to let fear of judgment prevent them from voicing their struggles. She stressed that silence can be harmful, while speaking up can save lives.
Let them say you’re oversharing!! Let them think you talk too much!! But speak up!!! Because when you’re alive, there’s a solution. Silence can be deadly, but words can save. You are stronger than you think. You are braver than you feel. You are loved more than you know. Speak up, stay alive!!” she tweeted, ending with the hashtags #suicidenottheoption and #notosuicide.
The mother of two also reflected on her personal experiences with mental health challenges. In a recent interview with Chude’s Live talk show, Funke revealed how social media bullying during her protege Jumoke Aderounmu’s passing worsened her depression. She also admitted that the death of her mother, political backlash, and public mockery of her failed marriage pushed her to seek therapy.
Despite her struggles, Funke has consistently shared motivational words with her fans. Months ago, she encouraged young creatives, reminding them that success comes from perseverance and hard work. While recounting her journey to building the Jenifa’s Diary brand, she credited her success to God, hustle, and unwavering determination.
