The Gombe State Government has approved a new special allowance for education workers at the local government level as part of efforts to enhance the quality of teaching and learning across public schools.

The decision was announced following a state executive council meeting chaired by Governor Muhammadu Inuwa Yahaya, who emphasized the administration’s commitment to improving the welfare of teachers and education support staff.

Under the new policy, primary school teachers and other local government education personnel will receive enhanced monthly incentives aimed at boosting morale and addressing long-standing concerns about remuneration.

The governor explained that the allowance was designed to recognise the critical role of grassroots educators in shaping the future of the state. Officials confirmed that the implementation would begin immediately, with provisions made in the revised local government budgets to accommodate the increased expenditure.

The move has been applauded by education stakeholders, including the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), which described it as a timely intervention to address disparities in the treatment of teachers across different tiers of government.

Parents’ associations also welcomed the development, expressing hope that improved teacher welfare would translate to better learning outcomes for students.

The approval aligns with the state’s broader education sector reforms, which include infrastructure upgrades, teacher training programs, and initiatives to reduce out-of-school children.

Governor Yahaya reaffirmed his administration’s determination to prioritise education and welfare of education workers, noting that no society could achieve meaningful development without investing in its human capital through quality education.
