The Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party Governors Forum, Bauchi State Governor Bala Mohammed, has publicly stated the reason he believes his party lost the 2023 presidential election.
Governor Mohammed made this disclosure during a televised interview, where he engaged in a question-and-answer session on a major news programme.
According to the governor, the fundamental error that cost the PDP the election was its decision not to zone its presidential ticket to the southern part of Nigeria.
He described the entire experience of the 2023 election as an unpleasant one for the party, directly linking the negative outcome to this specific strategic choice.
Governor Mohammed framed the event as a significant learning experience for the party, suggesting that defeat provided a crucial lesson in political strategy and internal party unity.
Bala comments come with the acknowledgement that the party has since taken corrective action. Governor Mohammed referenced the recent decision made during the PDP’s National Executive Committee meeting, where the party officially zoned its presidential ticket for the forthcoming 2027 elections to southern Nigeria.
This move indicates the party’s intention to apply the lessons learned from its previous defeat and to unify behind a strategy it believes will be more successful in the next national poll.
