Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola disclosed the reason behind Kevin de Bruyne’s absence from the starting lineup against Real Madrid in the Champions League clash. Guardiola explained that De Bruyne was experiencing illness, including vomiting, just before the match.
Despite being initially prepared to play, De Bruyne felt unwell upon arriving in the locker room, prompting Guardiola to make a last-minute adjustment to the lineup. Mateo Kovacic was brought in to replace De Bruyne, who remained on the bench for the game.
De Bruyne’s absence comes amidst an injury-disrupted season for the midfielder, who has struggled with hamstring issues earlier. However, his recent performance against Crystal Palace showcased his pivotal role in the team, scoring twice and providing an assist.
Despite missing De Bruyne, Manchester City seized an early advantage in the match, with Bernardo Silva netting a quick free-kick goal in the second minute. The goal set a positive tone for City, who emerged victorious on a 5-1 aggregate last season in their journey to clinching the European title.
Guardiola also confirmed that goalkeeper Ederson was not fully fit, while Josko Gvardiol and Nathan Ake faced doubts due to injury concerns.
