The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) said it has recovered 3,817 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) from flooding ahead of the Edo State governorship election on September 21, 2024.
On Friday, May 24, 2024, a strong downpour at the Commission’s Edo State offices in Benin City damaged several items, including the voter enrolment equipment and cars.
The rain that flooded the commission’s property harmed office furniture and equipment, mobile and immovable objects, including cars parked there, and voters’ enrollment devices that were already set up for Continuous Voter Registration (CVR).
This information was revealed on Wednesday during the commission’s stakeholders’ meeting about the state governorship election in Benin City by the state’s resident electoral commissioner, Dr. Anugbum Onuoha.
According to him:
“We tested all BVAS after the flood to confirm all ports and hardware features are in order. 3,817 BVAs were recovered from the flood. We also received BVAs from neighbouring states for the conduct of the election.”
He stated that the BVAS had been charged to guarantee that the battery life would endure throughout the election and that power banks for backup power had also been charged.
He did, however, urge all stakeholders to help the commission in organizing voters who have obtained their Permanent Voters Cards (PVCs) to turn out in large numbers to vote for their preferred party and candidate.
