At least 70 houses have been destroyed following a prolonged period of heavy rainfall in the Malam Madori local government area of Jigawa State.
The council’s Information Officer, Musa Muhammad, confirmed the incident in a press statement released on Monday. He detailed that many homes were either severely damaged or remained surrounded by floodwaters in several areas, including Tonikutara, Gandun Sarki, Gandun Bundugoma, and Shagari Quarters.
The disaster occurred after a torrential downpour that lasted for many hours on Sunday. The intensity of the rainfall overwhelmed local waterways and filled drainage culverts to capacity, leading to widespread flooding across the community. The resulting floodwaters caused significant structural damage to residential buildings, displacing numerous families.
Some of the victims have already made urgent appeals to the Jigawa State Government for immediate assistance to help them recover from the devastating loss of their homes and property. The council chairman of Malam Madori, Salisu Sani, expressed his sympathy to those affected by the natural disaster.
He assured residents that he would promptly notify the state’s local emergency management committee to conduct a thorough assessment of the damage in all the affected areas. This assessment is a critical first step toward providing necessary relief and support to the victims.
