Imo State Governor, Hope Uzodimma, has set a new minimum pay of N40,000 for workers in the state to alleviate the suffering caused by the loss of fuel subsidies. In addition, the governor announced an N5 billion revolving loan programme for farmers, as well as free transportation and medical treatment.
Uzodimma made the news on Saturday in Owerri during a special meeting with key Imo stakeholders.
The governor stated that free transportation, eating, and medical treatment were only available to public workers.
Other palliatives, he says, include the creation of marketing and commodities boards, mass housing, and the recruitment of additional instructors.
Uzodimma also announced that the government had initiated a scholarship program for Imo students and assured timely payment for pensioners.
“It is clear to me that our people are suffering, particularly the low-income earners and those in paid employment.
“I have therefore convened this special meeting with the leadership of Organised Labour, Traders, Farmers, and Artisans, to announce the comprehensive palliative measures we are putting in place, which I am sure will ease these sufferings,” he noted.
He expressed optimism that the measures would boost the economy, generate new employment, and raise employees’ earnings.
Uzodimma asked the state Head of Service to draw up the details for free daily meals and medical care at designated hospitals for civil servants.
