Include EFCC, ICPC Acts in Constitution to end the diversionary debate – Falana tells NASS

Femi Falana, a human rights advocate, has called on the National Assembly to use the current constitutional review to put a stop to the pointless discussion concerning the legality of the Independent Corrupt Practice and Other Related Offenses Commission (ICPC) and the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) Acts.

This may be accomplished, according to the senior attorney, by securing both anti-graft agencies in the Constitution.

Falaba made this request in two different letters to the Senate President and the House of Representatives Speaker, who are the National Assembly’s leadership.

According to Falana:

“If both commissions are constitutionalised, they will be protected and strengthened to fight the menace of corruption and money laundering.”

The human rights advocate was responding to remarks made by Olisa Agbakoba (SAN), a former president of the Nigerian Bar Association, who argued that the National Assembly lacked the authority to create the EFCC.

Falana criticized Agbakoba’s claims that the Supreme Court had repeatedly slapped the EFCC, citing instances that had already been decided.

On the contrary, Falana said, the Supreme Court has continuously backed the ICPC’s and the EFCC’s efforts to combat the nation’s massive corruption.
