Borno State Governor Babagana Zulum has raised concerns over insurgents leveraging advanced technology, including drones, to outmanoeuvre Nigerian military forces in the ongoing conflict in the Northeast.
In a recent interview on News Central TV, Zulum highlighted the pressing need for the federal and state governments to collaborate and prioritise security investments to counter this evolving threat.
“The Army doesn’t have the necessary equipment on the ground to fight the insurgents,” Zulum stated, emphasising that insurgents are now employing technology to gain an advantage over soldiers.
He revealed that the Chief of Army Staff is seeking to acquire 32 drones, each costing approximately $5.5 million, to bolster the military’s capabilities.
Zulum questioned why resources couldn’t be pooled to procure these drones and address the security challenges effectively.
The governor also underscored the importance of direct government-to-government procurement of military equipment to ensure value for money and avoid reliance on contractors who may not deliver the necessary assets.
Zulum advocated for a united front between federal and state authorities to prioritise security and depoliticise the issue of insecurity.
Zulum expressed confidence that with the right approach and resources, the insurgency could be curtailed within six months.
