The Isale Eko Descendants’ Union has expressed dissatisfaction with the portrayal of the Eyo masquerade in the recently released movie, “Gangs of Lagos.” Directed by Jade Osiberu and Kemi Akindoju, the movie features Tobi Bakre and Adesua Etomi, among others. It is currently being streamed on Amazon Prime Video.

According to a statement signed by the union’s chairman, Mr Yomi Tokosi, the Eyo masquerade, is unique to the Isale Eko community in Lagos. It was scandalously depicted as a camouflage and subterfuge for murderers and gangsters operating in the Isale Eko area. The union stated that the Eyo masquerade has been part of the cultural heritage of the Isale Eko community for over 179 years. It is a masquerade for celebration on Lagos Island. Therefore, it is not an agent of gangsters.

The union went on to express its disappointment that its culture was-

exploited in such a despicable and insensitive manner by Amazon Prime Video to the detriment of the Isale Eko community“.

They also stated that the illegal and shameful description of the Eyo masquerade in the movie is actionable. Their complaint has been lodged with the National Film and Censors Board. Furthermore, they have also involved other major stakeholders.

Furthermore, the Isale Eko Descendants’ Union is currently considering legal action for the alleged damage. Essentially, the damage done to the culture, tradition, and image of the Eko community and the Eyo masquerade. Additionally, if you’d like to see a review of the movie, check here.
