Jada-Pinkett-Smith on battling alopecia

In recent years, the Matrix franchise and Girls Trip star, Jada Pinkett Smith has been very open about her hair loss which was diagnosed as alopecia. The condition has placed her in the spotlight for some time now. Remember the actress had disclosed her condition in a June episode of her chat series Red Table Talk explaining how the toughest part for her is how her hair comes and goes. She says:

People don’t understand what alopecia is, and they don’t understand the effects of it.

Meanwhile, in a recent interview with The Guardian, Jada Pinkett Smith discussed her journey through life with alopecia. This had really set tongues wagging against her husband Will after he slapped, comedian and Oscar presenter, Chris Rock following the joke Rock had made about her shaved head.

Remember this took place in March in the 2022 Academy Award ceremony. Rock had likened Jada Pinkett to Demi Moore’s G.I. Jane character, whose iconic look is a shaved head. This reference made Will so angry that he walked up to the stage and introduced Rock’s face to his hand.

The following day, in an Instagram post, Will Smith tendered a public apology stating that:

..a joke about Jada’s medical condition was too much for me to bear, and I reacted emotionally.

Pinkett Smith was asked if she had learned anything after having her condition get such a public spotlight and she responded by saying;

I learned a lot about detachment,” Pinkett Smith said. “And I learned a deeper beauty within myself, being able to let my hair go.

She described her diagnosis as;

a great teacher. It’s been a hard one, a scary one — because specifically as Black women, we identify so much of ourselves with our hair. And it was scary. I had to really dig deep and see the beauty of myself  beyond my aesthetics.

It’s good to know Jada Pinkett is an inspiration to other women who are equally dealing with alopecia. Kindly share your thoughts about this in the comment section.
