45 Japanese citizens and their spouses have evacuated from Sudan and temporarily closed its embassy, Prime Minister of Japan, Fumio Kishida, and officials confirmed on Tuesday.
“A total of 45 people took off from eastern Sudan for Djibouti in the C2 transport aircraft dispatched” by Japanese troops, Kishida told reporters.
He said that with the help of France and international organizations, four of its other Japanese were also able to travel from Sudan to Djibouti and Ethiopia.
Hours later, Kishida added that eight Japanese had also left Sudan with French support.
“This completes the evacuation of all Japanese who were in Khartoum until yesterday and wanted to be evacuated, including embassy personnel”,
In a statement, Japan’s foreign minister announced that they temporarily closed the embassy after evacuating the staff.
The ministry said it had set up a liaison office in Djibouti to continue assisting in evacuating the remaining Japanese in Sudan.
Japan said it had about 60 civilians in Sudan when it decided to evacuate the chaos-stricken Sudan.
After 10 days of fighting in Sudan, the US said the warring factions had negotiated a three-day ceasefire that will take effect on Tuesday.
