The Jigawa State Agency for the Control of AIDS (JISACA) has announced its ambitious target to eliminate HIV/AIDS in the state by 2030.
Ibrahim Almajiri, the agency’s manager, revealed this during an interview on Radio Jigawa’s program “Jigawa A Yau,” highlighting the state’s significant progress in controlling the disease’s spread over recent years.
Almajiri detailed the comprehensive support system established for people living with HIV/AIDS in Jigawa, including psychosocial support, consistent access to medication, and nutritious food supplies.
These interventions have played a crucial role in reducing stigma and discrimination against affected individuals in the state. The agency has strategically positioned 17 anti-retroviral treatment centres across various locations, complemented by numerous HIV/AIDS testing facilities to ensure widespread accessibility.
In a move to further improve treatment accessibility, JISACA plans to begin dispensing anti-retroviral drugs at primary healthcare centres statewide. This expansion aims to make life-saving medications more readily available to patients, particularly in rural communities. The agency has also implemented mandatory HIV testing for all intending couples before marriage as part of its prevention strategy.
Additionally, all HIV-positive patients in Jigawa have been enrolled in the Dan Modi Healthcare program, ensuring continuous medical support. Current national data shows Nigeria has over two million people living with HIV/AIDS, with Jigawa maintaining the lowest prevalence rate at just 0.3% of its population – a testament to the state’s effective control measures.
Through these targeted interventions and expanded healthcare services, Jigawa State demonstrates its commitment to achieving the global 2030 HIV elimination target while maintaining its status as Nigeria’s state with the lowest HIV prevalence.
