The Minister of Justice and Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi, has underscored the critical importance of a justice system that is fair, impartial, and neutral in its application, particularly regarding gender.

He stated that maintaining the credibility of the justice system hinges on its ability to be applied without bias.

The Minister made these remarks at the inauguration of a significant new project titled “Strengthening Right-Based Approach to Administration of Criminal Justice Act (ACJA) Framework and Advancing Women, Peace and Security (WPS) in Nigeria,” which was held on Tuesday in Abuja.

Represented by Mr. David Emmanuel, an Assistant Director at the Ministry of Justice, the AGF elaborated on the project’s objectives.

He highlighted the urgent need to strengthen the delivery of justice, enhance institutional accountability, and, most importantly, ensure the robust protection of all citizens’ rights. He described these principles as central pillars of Nigeria’s entire justice system.

Fagbemi commended the project as both timely and strategic for its dual focus. The first objective is the full implementation of the transformative Administration of Criminal Justice Act across twelve states in the federation, a move expected to deepen respect for human rights, promote speedier trials, and reduce incidents of prolonged pre-trial detention.

The second objective involves the effective operationalisation of the Women, Peace, and Security agenda in five states. This component recognises the indispensable role women play in peacebuilding, conflict resolution, and fostering inclusive governance.

The Minister reiterated the Federal Ministry of Justice’s unwavering commitment to supporting initiatives that advance the rule of law, protect human dignity, and firmly entrench a rights-based approach throughout all levels of governance in Nigeria.
