Kaduna: Governor Sani Warns Against Politicising Insecurity

Governor Uba Sani of Kaduna State has issued a strong admonition to political opponents, urging them to cease politicizing the critical issue of insecurity.

He specifically criticized claims that bandits could be eliminated through methods like carpet-bombing, describing such assertions as deceptive and unworkable.

The Governor delivered this counsel while representing President Bola Tinubu as the Special Guest of Honour at the public presentation of a translated book by the late Sheikh Abubakar Mahmud Gumi. The event was organized by the Jama’atu Izalatul Bid’ah Wa Iqamatus Sunnah (JIBWIS) on Saturday.

In his address, Governor Sani emphasized that the nature of insecurity in the Northwest is fundamentally different from the ideologically-driven Boko Haram insurgency in the Northeast.

He identified the root causes of banditry as deep-seated socio-economic problems, including pervasive poverty, widespread unemployment, and the prolonged neglect of rural communities. He argued that a purely military solution is therefore insufficient and unrealistic.

Governor Sani stressed that resolving the crisis requires a comprehensive strategy beyond the use of firearms. He expressed concern over the nation’s security manpower, noting a troubling disparity.

He revealed that in 1970, Nigeria had approximately 300,000 soldiers, but that number has now fallen to less than 250,000 despite the country’s population growing by over 100 million people in the same period.

This shortage, he explained, is exacerbated by the vast, ungoverned spaces in the region, where one can travel 50 kilometers in areas like Zamfara, Birnin Gwari, or the forests of Katsina without encountering a single police officer or soldier. Governor Sani concluded that anyone promising a solution based solely on force is not being truthful with the Nigerian people.
