The Kaduna State Government has established seven emergency safe centres to protect residents in flood-prone areas as the rainy season intensifies.
The initiative aims to provide temporary shelter, relief materials, and medical assistance to communities at high risk of flooding, reducing potential loss of life and property.
According to officials, the safe centres are strategically located in local government areas historically affected by seasonal floods.
These facilities are equipped with basic amenities, including food supplies, clean water, bedding, and first aid kits, to ensure displaced families receive immediate support. The government has also deployed emergency response teams to monitor water levels and coordinate evacuations if necessary.
Residents in vulnerable communities have been urged to relocate to the nearest safe centre at the first sign of flooding. Authorities emphasised the importance of early preparedness, noting that climate change has increased the frequency and severity of floods in recent years. Community leaders are working with the government to raise awareness and ensure compliance with safety measures.
The Kaduna State Emergency Management Agency has assured the public that contingency plans are in place to address any flood-related disasters.
The agency is collaborating with the Nigerian Meteorological Agency to provide regular weather updates and early warnings to at-risk populations.
While the safe centres initiative has been welcomed by residents, some community members have called for long-term solutions, such as improved drainage systems and flood barriers, to mitigate recurring disasters.
The government has acknowledged these concerns, stating that further infrastructural projects are under consideration to enhance resilience against future flooding.
