Bagwai Local Government Council in Kano State has officially prohibited all farming activities within the designated cattle grazing reserves.

This directive, which came into effect on June 2, 2025, is part of a broader effort to resolve rising land disputes and regulate land use between farmers and herders in the region.

The acting Chairman of the Council, Alhaji Haruna Garba Sarkin Biro, made the announcement during a stakeholder meeting held at the district head’s office in Bagwai.

He explained that the decision aligns with directives from Kano State Governor, Alhaji Abba Kabir Yusuf, aimed at ensuring peaceful coexistence and eliminating conflict over land use.

Alhaji Haruna emphasised that the grazing reserves are meant strictly for herding activities, not farming. He noted that individuals seeking access to these areas must possess valid documentation, which will be subject to yearly verification at designated government centres. The objective, he added, is to bring structure and accountability to how grazing lands are used.

Also speaking on the issue, Alhaji Salisu Garba Bagwai, the leader of the New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) caucus in Bagwai, urged herders to remain within the approved areas and warned that defaulters would be sanctioned. He described the enforcement as a unified step by local authorities to uphold the rule of law.

Alhaji Masa’ud Badau, the NNPP Chairman in Bagwai, expressed hope that the ban would help resolve long-standing conflicts between farmers and herders and lead to lasting peace. The council has begun immediate enforcement and directed local leaders to ensure full compliance.
