250 cooperative groups will be activated and supported statewide; according to the Kano State Government, as part of its empowerment plan.
Alhaji Jamilu Abbas-Kiru, the recently appointed Special Adviser on Cooperative Groups to Governor Kabiru Yusuf, revealed this to the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) in Kano on Sunday.
He stated:
“Gov. Abba Yusuf has a comprehensive socio-economic development plan for our dear Kano State.
“He is determined to stimulate and enhance commerce and industrialisation, energy, security as well as climate change initiatives in the state.
“The administration has equally resolved to deliver quality and accessible healthcare services, functional education, rural development and water supply.”
The aide detailed how several cooperative societies from diverse trades, such as agriculture, business, handicrafts, craftsmen, and transportation, would be chosen, trained and empowered across the state.
He claims that the empowerment method is compatible with the present digitalization of the world’s economic activity.
According to Abbas-Kiru, who also serves as National President of MATAN, the market and traders association of Nigeria:
“Majority of our people are in rural areas and lack adequate knowledge and benefits of cooperativism. They rarely belong to or form cooperative societies.
“They are also deficient in modern Information Communication Technology (ICT) and how it is driving socio-economic activities.”
Therefore, he revealed that the government will assist in the formation and empowerment of such cooperative groups, as well as connect the members of these cooperatives with banks and financial institutions to allow them to access intervention money and ease their enterprises.
