Kano Govt denies blocking individual donations to GSM market fire victims

The Kano State government has refuted claims that it is preventing individuals and organisations from donating relief materials to victims of the recent GSM market fire incident.

A devastating fire engulfed the popular market earlier this week, destroying hundreds of shops and causing significant financial losses for traders.

In a statement issued by the state Commissioner for Information, the government clarified that it has not imposed any restrictions on donations intended to support affected traders in the GSM market.

Rather, authorities are coordinating relief efforts to ensure transparent and equitable distribution of aid to all victims. The commissioner emphasised that the government welcomes support from well-meaning individuals and groups but is working to prevent duplication or mismanagement of resources.

The fire, which broke out in the early hours of the morning, left many traders in despair as they lost goods worth millions of naira. While emergency responders managed to contain the blaze, the cause of the fire remains under investigation.

The state government has since set up a committee to assess the extent of the damage and provide immediate assistance to those affected. Some victims have already received temporary stalls in nearby markets to help them resume business activities.

Officials urged the public to disregard rumours suggesting that donations were being blocked, assuring that all contributions would reach the intended beneficiaries through proper channels.

The government also called for continued support from philanthropic organisations and the private sector to help traders from the GSM market recover from their losses.
