In response to the tragic accident that claimed the lives of 22 athletes returning from the National Sports Festival in Abeokuta, Ogun State, the Kano State government has announced a financial support package for the bereaved families.
Each family is set to receive ₦1 million, amounting to a total of ₦22 million in relief funds.
Deputy Governor Comrade Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo announced during a visit to Nasarawa Hospital, where the bodies of the deceased were taken.
Speaking on behalf of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf, Gwarzo described the incident as a profound tragedy for Kano State and the nation. He praised the athletes for their achievements at the festival, noting that some had won gold medals before their untimely deaths.
In addition to the financial assistance, the government has promised to provide food and other essential relief materials to support the grieving families.
Governor Yusuf also directed that immediate support be extended and that those injured in the accident receive the best possible medical care. Gwarzo confirmed that 20 of the athletes have been identified so far, with two bodies already collected by their families for burial.
“On behalf of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf and the people of Kano State, we extend our heartfelt condolences to the families of those who died. May Allah forgive their sins and grant them Jannatul Firdaus,” Gwarzo said.
The deputy governor also visited Murtala Mohammed Specialist Hospital, where seven injured athletes are currently being treated, to offer his support and ensure they are receiving adequate care.
