Alhaji Abba Yusuf, the governor of Kano State, has announced a N20,000 stipend for the state’s schoolgirls in an effort to encourage them to attend classes.
Over 45,000 schoolgirls will benefit from the pilot programme, according to the governor, who made the announcement on Sunday during his Independence Day speech at the Sani Abacha Stadium in Kofar Mata, Kano.
He stated:
“To support girls-child education and encourage parents to send their daughters to school, we are issuing a stipend of N20,000 to over 45,000 girl-child as a pilot scheme to support them to continue schooling. We are also re-introducing the girl-child school buses to transport them to and from schools.”
In a separate statement, Yusuf said that his administration will build additional elementary and secondary schools in all 44 of the state’s local government districts “in our quest to mop up all out-of-school children roaming our streets.”
“Schools are being renovated in batches; we are providing free uniforms, school bags, and shoes at the pilot stage, and we are providing free exercise books and textbooks to primary and Junior Secondary School pupils. And arrangements have reached an advanced stage in providing one free meal (per day) to primary school pupils,” he added.
According to the governor, his administration will also pay for 1001 first-class graduates to attend foreign colleges to pursue master’s degrees.
He reaffirmed the administration’s dedication and resolve to address the issues plaguing the nation, including as youth unrest, poverty, and unemployment.
Yusuf paid a shining homage to the great patriots and patriotic freedom warriors who gave their all to guarantee the nation’s freedom on the occasion of the anniversary of its independence.
