The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) in Kano State, has arrested 1,016 individuals and collected nine tonnes of illegal narcotics in 2023.

Mr Abubakar Idris-Ahmad, commandant of the agency in Kano State, told this to newsmen on Sunday in Kano, adding the suspects apprehended included 40 girls and 976 males.

He stated that the bureau obtained 102 convictions in the previous year, forfeited five vehicles, and had 104 cases ongoing in court.

He said that 6,098kg of Indian hemp, 1,696kg of codeine and tramadol, and 1,335kg of cocaine, heroin, and methamphetamine were seized.

According to Idris-Ahmad:

“We rehabilitated 70 clients, investigated 598 visa clearance applications and conducted 245 substance abuse tests, out of which six persons tested positive for different drug abuses.

“We also sensitised 5,000 individuals and engaged Drug Demand Reduction professionals who counselled 1,459 persons.’’

He further stated that in 2023, the command eliminated more than 15 tonnes of various narcotic narcotics and psychotropic substances.

He reaffirmed the command’s commitment to protecting communities from the catastrophic repercussions of drug usage.

“We will intensify efforts at dismantling drug networks, rehabilitate those in need, secure convictions and destroy illicit substances leaving no room for drug trade to flourish,’’ he added.
