The Kano State Police Command has revealed that six family members died after eating a local dish known as Danwake in the state’s Gwarzo traditional Government Area.
Alhakatu Abdulkarim, a widow, and her five children, Bashir, Firdausi, Hafsat, Usman, and Jamilu, died a few hours after consuming the alleged poisoned delicacy.
Abdullahi Haruna, spokesman for the Kano Police Command, confirmed the unfortunate incident on Sunday, saying the victims were brought to Gwarzo General Hospital, where physicians confirmed their deaths.
Haruna did, however, add that the Command has initiated an investigation to solve the mystery surrounding the deaths.
“We are still waiting for the medical report from the hospital to ascertain the cause of the death of the six persons,” the official stated.
The event was reported to have occurred last Thursday, when the widow, who was responsible for feeding her five children, allegedly used outdated cassava flour to prepare the dinner.
