Kano state govt imposes ban on scrap metal imports from Borno, Yobe

The Kano State Government has announced a ban on the importation of scrap metals from Borno and Yobe States as part of enhanced security measures to curb criminal activities.

The decision was disclosed by the state’s Commissioner for Information, Baba Halilu Dantiye, following rising concerns that scrap materials were being used to conceal illicit items, including weapons used by criminal elements.

Authorities explained that the ban was necessary after security reports indicated that scrap dealers in neighbouring states might be unknowingly facilitating the movement of dangerous materials into Kano.

The government expressed concerns that such materials could be repurposed for criminal activities, posing a threat to public safety.

The commissioner emphasised that the restriction was not targeted at legitimate businesses but was a precautionary step to strengthen security.

He urged scrap dealers in Kano to source materials locally and cooperate with security agencies in identifying suspicious transactions. The government also warned that violators of the ban would face strict penalties, including possible prosecution.

Local scrap dealers have expressed mixed reactions to the policy, with some acknowledging the security concerns while others worry about the economic impact on their livelihoods.

The Kano State Government has assured stakeholders that alternative measures are being considered to minimise disruptions to legitimate trade.

Security analysts have supported the move, noting that similar restrictions in other states have helped reduce the smuggling of weapons and explosives. The ban is expected to remain in place until improved monitoring systems are implemented to ensure safer cross-border scrap metal trade.
