Kelechi Ndukwe becomes first Nigerian to command US Navy warship

Kelechi Ndukwe has made history as the first Nigerian to command a US Navy naval vessel.

Kelechi Ndukwe was promoted to the rank of Commander in the United States Navy on Thursday, August 29, 2024.

Victor Agunbiade, a US Army officer, shared the news on his official X and congratulated Ndukwe on his success.

Agunbiade shared photos from the promotion event, writing, “Ladies and Gentlemen, meet the newest US Navy Captain Kelechi Ndukwe.” The first Nigerian to command a US Navy warship! Congratulations on the promotion, Captain! “Well deserved.”

In response to the news about X, Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairman of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission, commended Kelechi Ndukwe on his success.

“A hearty congratulations to Navy Captain Kelechi R Ndukwe who has been promoted to the rank of Navy Captain from Commander, in the US NAVY.”
