The Kogi State Government has denied that Lassa fever has spread across the state’s 21 local government areas.
Dr. Abdulazeez Adams Adeiza, the state’s Commissioner of Health, stated in response to a viral video of an alleged lassa fever epidemic that a student hospitalised to the Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja did not die from the disease.
The Commissioner revealed that the student died from hemorrhagic fever.
The Commissioner stated that the dead student, who was admitted to the Federal Teaching Hospital Lokoja, complained of fever and gum bleeding.
He noted that the patient was being studied and handled, and samples were obtained and submitted to the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control (NCDC) in Abuja, but he died before the results were revealed.
The Commissioner stated that the results were negative for Lassa fever.
In his words:
”The suspected case has turned out to be negative for lassa fever.
“It is not only lassa fever that can make a patient to present bleeding from the gum. Other reasons could include blood dyscrasias and bleeding disorders”.
He encouraged the people to dismiss the story because no cases of lassa fever had been detected in the state.
