The Lagos State Government has closed five markets in the state’s Mushin and Odi-Olowo regions due to environmental pollution and other violations.
Tokunbo Wahab, Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, and Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, Special Adviser, SA, Environment, have called a meeting with Private Sector Participants, PSP, trash operators, to discuss methods to enhance service delivery and transparency.
Awolowo Ultra Modern Market Odi-olowo Ojuwoye Mushin, Ojuwoye Market Odi-olowo Ojuwoye Mushin, Mushin Main Market, Daleko Market Mushin, and Odo Ashimowu Market, Mushin were among the marketplaces closed on the commissioner’s instructions.
The markets were blocked by the Lagos Waste Management Authority, LAWMA, in partnership with the Lagos Environmental Sanitation Corps, LAGESC, and Kick Against Indiscipline, KAI, according to Wahab.
The Commissioner said:
“Operatives of LAWMA in conjunction with LAGESC/KAI onSunday sealed five markets in the Mushin and Odi-Olowo Local Council areas.
“They were sealed for contravening provisions of the 2017 Environmental Management Protection law.
“Being aware that PSP operators are in business to make profit and sustain employment, then cash collection must be digitized for transparency.”
