Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced plans to host a special reception for the victorious members of Team Lagos in recognition of their outstanding performance at the recently concluded 9th National Youth Games.

The team clinched the overall championship title, securing the top position on the medals table well before the official closing ceremony in Asaba, Delta State, ultimately outperforming the host state and Edo State, which finished in second and third place, respectively.

During a virtual meeting held with the athletes and their officials from his hotel in Asaba, Governor Sanwo-Olu expressed immense pride and profound gratitude to the young champions, their dedicated coaches, and the entire Lagos State Sports Commission for their remarkable achievement.

He confirmed that a formal celebratory dinner will be organised at the State House within the next fortnight to properly honor their success. The Governor specifically commended the parents of the athletes for their unwavering support and encouraged the young sportsmen and women to maintain their discipline as they advance to higher levels of competition, including national and U-17 teams.

The Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, praised Governor Sanwo-Olu for his consistent support of sports development, noting that this victory marks Lagos’s return to the pinnacle of Nigerian sports after several years.

He highlighted the team’s integrity, emphasising that all athletes competed in their correct age categories, with notable victories including a schoolboy winning the 200m title and the U-15 girls’ team securing gold in football. The team’s final medal haul stood at an impressive 82 medals, comprising 40 gold, 25 silver, and 17 bronze, solidifying their position as the nation’s leading sporting state.
