Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced plans to host a special reception for the members of Team Lagos in recognition of their emphatic and decisive victory at the 9th National Youth Games.
The event concluded in Asaba, Delta State, with Team Lagos securing the top position on the medals table well before the official closing ceremony, outperforming host state Delta and Edo who finished in second and third place, respectively.
In a virtual meeting held from his hotel in Asaba, Governor Sanwo-Olu conveyed his immense pride and gratitude to the young athletes, their coaches, and the entire Lagos State Sports Commission.
He expressed his excitement that Lagos had once again demonstrated its supremacy in Nigerian sports. The Governor promised that a celebratory dinner would be organized at the State House within the next two weeks to properly honor their remarkable achievement.
Sanwo-Olu also extended his commendation to the parents of the athletes for their crucial support and encouraged the young champions to maintain discipline as they advance to higher levels of competition, including U-17 and national teams.
He praised the Director-General of the Lagos State Sports Commission, Lekan Fatodu, for his exceptional leadership and commitment to developing sports at the grassroots level.
In his response, Fatodu applauded Governor Sanwo-Olu for his unwavering support, stating that this historic victory marks Lagos’s return to the pinnacle of Nigerian sports. He highlighted the team’s integrity, noting that Lagos fielded athletes who were true to their age categories, with a schoolboy winning the 200m title and U-15 girls securing gold in football. By Friday evening, Team Lagos had amassed a commanding total of 82 medals: 40 gold, 25 silver, and 17 bronze.
