The Lagos State Government has called on striking staff members of Lagos State University (LASU) to halt their ongoing industrial action, allowing for proper assessment and resolution of their demands.
The appeal was made by the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule, in a statement released by the ministry’s Director of Public Affairs, Mamud Hassan.
Sule emphasised the government’s commitment to the university’s development and the welfare of its staff and students, urging calm and cooperation from all stakeholders.
He specifically appealed to the leadership of the Joint Action Committee (JAC)—comprising ASUU-LASU, SSANU-LASU, NAAT-LASU, and NASU-LASU—to reconsider their position and allow further discussions.
“Despite the financial pressures of managing a megacity like Lagos, we remain dedicated to prioritising tertiary education,” Sule stated. “Through collaboration and mutual understanding, we can achieve a sustainable resolution that benefits everyone.”
The government expressed concern that the indefinite strike disrupts academic activities and negatively impacts students, who are the university’s primary focus. It reiterated its willingness to engage in dialogue to restore normalcy at LASU, noting that peaceful negotiations remain the best approach to resolving the dispute.
According to the statement, the Ministry of Tertiary Education has maintained open communication with the unions and acknowledged their welfare-related concerns. Formal discussions involving the Lagos State Head of Service, Bode Agoro, have already taken place, with all parties agreeing to avoid actions that could further disrupt academic and industrial harmony while demands are being evaluated.
