Lagos State Govt launches new registration for vulnerable households in welfare expansion

The Lagos State Government has initiated a fresh registration drive to identify indigent and vulnerable households previously excluded from its social welfare database.

The exercise, organised by the Ministry of Economic Planning and Budget, aims to enhance the precision of the state’s social protection programs by capturing those most in need of government assistance.

Commissioner Ope George oversaw the launch at Ajibola Community Development Area in Kosofe Local Government, where officials emphasised the administration’s commitment to inclusive welfare delivery.

Representing the Permanent Secretary, Director Oluwakemi Garbadeen-Adedeji stated the registration would help the government extend support to overlooked families. “This process ensures our interventions reach their intended beneficiaries,” she explained.

Community leaders welcomed the initiative, with Ajibola CDA Chairman Alhaja Arikawe Adewale praising Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s welfare policies. The high turnout at registration centres, he noted, demonstrated residents’ appreciation for the administration’s efforts to deliver “dividends of democracy.”

The registration forms part of Lagos State’s broader strategy to integrate its Single Social Register with the National Identification Number system, a process underway since April across all 57 LGAs and LCDAs. By aligning these databases, the government seeks to improve the efficiency of social service distribution while minimising duplication and fraud.

Officials confirmed the exercise would continue in phases across the state, with priority given to marginalised communities. The initiative reflects Lagos’ commitment to data-driven governance as it scales up poverty alleviation programs amid rising economic pressures on low-income families.
