The Lagos State Task Force on Environment and Special Offences stated it had arrested six people, including two women, for allegedly selling petroleum products by the roadside.
The agency’s spokesperson, Mr. Gbadeyan Abdulraheem, confirmed this in a statement on Tuesday.
Abdulraheem stated that the task force launched a massive operation against illicit gasoline sales in Fadeyi, Maryland, near the Charity Bus Stop and Airport Road, where the six criminals were apprehended.
According to the Lagos State Task Force, they were caught red-handed selling petrol to motorists at excessive prices, worsening an already difficult situation for many Lagos residents.
He revealed that the agency’s head, CSP Adetayo Akerele, oversaw the activities, emphasizing that the present gasoline crisis was no justification for criminals to abuse locals.
Abdulraheem confirmed that these fuel hawkers buy enormous amounts of petrol in gallons and kegs for resale along the roadside.
The spokesperson of Lagos State Task Force said:
“The arrested suspects’ practice not only burdens already struggling motorists but also poses significant safety risks due to the highly inflammable nature of petroleum products.
“We are committed to curbing these illegal activities and ensuring that the safety and well-being of the public are not compromised.
“The actions of these black market operators are not only cruel but also a severe threat to public safety, as the improper handling and storage of petrol could lead to catastrophic fire disaster.”
Abdulraheem advised individuals or organizations that collude with gas stations to sell petroleum products to stop immediately or risk arrest.
He reaffirmed that the agency will continue to crack down on illicit fuel sellers.
