Former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar has slammed the NNPCL for a lack of openness following the company’s admission of a $6 billion debt to petrol suppliers.
This revelation, made public on Sunday, September 1, explains the nation’s six-week-long gasoline crisis.
Mr. Olufemi Soneye, Chief Communications Officer of Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), verified the debt and highlighted the serious financial burden it has placed on the company’s operations.
Soneye said:
“NNPC Ltd has acknowledged recent reports regarding its significant debt to petrol suppliers. This financial strain threatens the sustainability of fuel supply.”
The Chief Communications Officer of NNPCL reassured that NNPCL is dedicated to its responsibility as the supplier of last resort despite the debt situation, as stipulated in the Petroleum Industry Act (PIA), and that it is collaborating with government authorities to maintain a continuous supply of petroleum products nationally.
In response to this incident, Atiku expressed serious worry about the debt situation through his media adviser, Phrank Shaibu.
“What has become of these fictitious or phantom profits you once proudly proclaimed? Layers of deceit and lack of transparency have brought you to this unfortunate juncture,” Atiku stated in a brief statement via X.
He further accused President Bola Tinubu’s government of leading the NNPC to disaster, calling the present activities a “ruthless dismantling of its assets.”
