A lightning strike during a heavy downpour on Sunday evening claimed the lives of eight cows in the Ori-Ohin community of Ifon, located in Ose Local Government Area of Ondo State.
The incident, which occurred without warning, has left residents of the area in a state of panic and confusion, with many fearing possible spiritual or supernatural implications.
Confirming the incident, the spokesperson of the Ondo State Police Command, Olayinka Ayanlade, told Channels Television that the lightning strike was a natural occurrence and not one to be misinterpreted.
Ayanlade expressed dismay over the loss and assured the public that there was no cause for alarm. He also revealed that the police had already engaged with community leaders in Ori-Ohin to ensure that the situation does not lead to unnecessary controversy or escalate into unrest.
“We are in touch with the community heads to keep things calm and prevent any misunderstanding or conflict from arising,” the Police Public Relations Officer said.
This is not the first time such an incident has occurred in Ondo State. In 2019, a similar tragedy struck in Ijare, a town in Ifedore Local Government Area, where thunder reportedly killed 36 cows grazing on a sacred hill.
