A 44-year-old man from Manchester, Michael Bernard Avery, has been charged under the Public Order Act 1986 for alleged tragedy chanting during Manchester United’s FA Cup victory over Liverpool at Old Trafford. The charge follows Greater Manchester Police’s investigation, with collaboration from clubs and supporters’ groups.
A video showing a man in the home section of the crowd led to the charge. Additional reports, including tragedy chants from the Liverpool section, are under investigation.
Previously, GMP made eight arrests, including two related to tragedy chanting. One man was charged with possession of a class B drug, possession of a pyrotechnic, and throwing missiles.
Chief Inspector Jamie Collins emphasized a zero-tolerance policy toward such behavior, urging the public to report incidents. He warned of consequences for future matches, including the upcoming Premier League fixture between the two clubs on April 7.
Both clubs and the majority of supporters support this stance against tragedy chanting. GMP pledges to take proactive measures to address such offenses.
