On Tuesday, a sharia court in Kano sentenced Murtala Halliru, a 20-year-old man, to six months in prison and 30 lashes for stealing 13 ceiling fans.

The News Agency of Nigeria reported that Halliru, who lives in the Gwamaja Quarters of Kano, was convicted of theft after pleading guilty.

Chief Justice Nura Yusuf-Ahmad sentenced the defendant to six months imprisonment with no possibility of a fine and ordered 30 lashes.

Yusuf-Ahmad also ordered the inmate to pay his N44,000 in compensation for the ceiling fan.

Earlier, prosecutor Aliyu Abideen told the court, the defendant said he committed the crime on February 23 at Kano State Polytechnic.

Around noon on the same day, Chief Security Officer Sani Suleiman of the University of Technology said he had arrested a defendant who was carrying two ceiling fans on a bicycle valued at Naira 8,000.

“During the course of the investigation, the defendant confessed to having stolen 11 ceiling fans valued at N44,000 from the said polytechnic,” Abideen said.

He added that the offense contravened the provision of Section 133 of the Kano State Shari’a Law.
