Minister Keyamo explains decision to appoint KWAM 1 as aviation ambassador

The Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, has explained the Federal Government’s decision to appoint musician Wasiu Ayinde Marshal, popularly known as KWAM 1, as an ambassador for proper airport security protocols.

This clarification comes after public criticism over the move.

Earlier on Wednesday, Keyamo confirmed that the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) had reduced KWAM 1’s flight ban from six months to one month. The musician was initially banned for obstructing the movement of a ValueJet aircraft.

As part of the revised penalty, KWAM 1 will now collaborate with the NCAA to raise awareness about acceptable conduct within the aviation sector.

Addressing the public reaction, Keyamo stated that the appointment aligns with global practices where repentant offenders are often tasked with promoting better behaviour in the same area where they previously violated rules.

He described the role as a form of community service, emphasising that it is voluntary and unpaid.

Keyamo further clarified that the term “ambassador” should not be misinterpreted as a prestigious or paid position. He noted that similar appointments have been made in the past for individuals who have demonstrated remorse and a willingness to educate others.

The minister stressed that such measures are not unusual and are intended to foster positive change rather than reward misconduct.

He concluded by stating that this approach is not new in Nigeria and will likely be used again in the future to encourage compliance with aviation regulations.
